چکیده

The ionosphere in ̄uences magnetohydrodynamic waves in the magnetosphere by damping because of Joule heating and by varying the wave structure itself. There are di€erent eigenvalues and eigensolutions of the three dimensional toroidal wave equation if the height integrated Pedersen conductivity exceeds a critical value, namely the wave conductance of the magnetosphere. As a result a jump in frequency can be observed in ULF pulsation records. This e€ect mainly occurs in regions with gradients in the Pedersen conductances, as in the auroral oval or the dawn and dusk areas. A pulsation event recorded by the geostationary GOES-6 satellite is presented. We explain the observed change in frequency as a change in the wave structure while crossing the terminator. Furthermore, selected results of numerical simulations in a dipole magnetosphere with realistic ionospheric conditions are discussed. These are in good agreement with the observational data.

Effect of anomalous electron heating on the transpolar potential in the LFM global MHD model

[1] The tendency of global MHD models to overestimate the transpolar potential in simulations of strong geomagnetic storms and evidence of an adverse feedback of the ionospheric conductance on the potential suggest that these models lack important physics leading to the conductance enhancement. Farley-Buneman instability in the auroral ionosphere provides this lacking physics. This instability ...

Field line resonant frequencies and ionospheric conductance: Results from a 2-D MHD model

[1] The magnetised plasma of the near-Earth space environment supports ultra-low frequency (ULF; 1–100 mHz), magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations. For sufficiently large ionospheric conductances, field line resonances (FLRs) form between the northern and southern ionospheres. These conditions are usually met for daytime ionosphere conductance values. The FLRs are normal modes of the system an...

Global MHD simulations of the strongly driven magnetosphere: Modeling of the transpolar potential saturation

[1] When the magnetosphere-ionosphere system is driven strongly by the solar wind, the ionospheric transpolar potential tends to saturate. The global MHD simulations are used to study this phenomenon and, in particular, the role the ionospheric conductance plays in controlling the dayside reconnection and the transpolar potentials. The feedback of the ionospheric conductance enhanced due to a h...

Ionospheric control of the magnetospheric configuration: Thermospheric neutral winds

[1] In this study we present the first results from the University of Michigan’s coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere general circulation model. This code is a combination of the Michigan MHD model with the NCAR thermosphere-ionosphereelectrodynamics general circulation model (TIEGCM). The MHD code provides specification of the high-latitude ionospheric electric potential and the parti...

Coupling of a global MHD code and an inner magnetospheric model: Initial results

[1] This paper describes the coupling of BATS-R-US (Block Adaptive Tree Solar-wind Roe-type Upwind Scheme), a magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code representing the Earth’s global magnetosphere and its coupling to the ionosphere and solar wind, and the Rice Convection Model (RCM), which represents the inner magnetosphere and its coupling to the ionosphere. The MHD code provides a time-evolving magnet...
